How to Care for Your Tile Floors

Tile floors are one of the most popular choices for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, laundry rooms, and entryways. Their easy-to-maintain characteristic makes them a simple choice amongst homeowners. But when it comes to actually maintaining and cleaning your tile floors, do you know how to do it properly? If you are a little uncertain or need a refresher, you came to the right place! We have the perfect guide on how to care for your tile floors. Let’s get started!

How to Care for Your Tile Floors:

  • Day to Day Maintenance.

To keep your tile floors lasting longer, we recommend regularly sweeping/vacuuming them to remove dirt and debris from the surface. Next, you should take a dampened mop and wipe down your floors once a week (depending on foot traffic). The mopping helps to reduce the effects of abrasion which are caused by grit and soil.

  • Cleaners for Unglazed + Glazed Tile.
    • Unglazed Tile.

With unglazed tiles, you will want a concentrated tile cleaner with a neutral pH. For your glass tile, you will want a nonabrasive cleaner that is recommended for glass/tile. If you need a recommendation, ask us for a great suggestion.

  • Glazed Tile.

With glazed tiles, you should clean with an all-purpose, non-oil-base cleaner. You will want this cleaner also to be “compatible” with your grout lines. For your shower walls, you can use an everyday multipurpose cleaner to reduce the effects of mildew, soap scum, and hard water deposits.

  • Preventative Measures.
  1. Always try a product out on a small, unseen area before using it on your entire room.
  2. Apply a sealer onto your grout joints after installation to help make using products on your grout joints easier and more efficient.
  3. Once you are finishing cleaning an area, be sure to rinse it with water to get rid of any left behind cleaner/solution.
  4. Always have damaged/broken tile removed and replaced as soon as possible by an expert.
  • No, No’s.
  1. Cleaners that contain acid or bleach for day to day maintenance.
  2. Cleaners that contain wax-bases or oil-based detergents.
  3. Using steel wool pads on your tile.
  4. Using a color-containing cleaning aid on your unglazed tile.

**Disclaimer: Before using any product on your flooring, we always recommend checking with us or the manufacturer guidelines.
