Open kitchen layouts seem to be all the rage. They are in many new homes, television shows, and magazines. We see more homes feature open layout homes, and they are believed to have come back into style in the last decade. However, trends can come and go. If you are looking to create an open kitchen layout or investing in a home with one, you need to make sure it is right for you. Here are the pros and cons of an open layout kitchen that you should take into consideration:
Disadvantages
Noise
With an open layout, noises will interfere with one another. If you like quietness in the kitchen, this layout may not be the best option for you. Also, if you listen to a radio or television in the kitchen, your adjacent rooms will also drown out sounds.
Privacy
No surprise, but an open layout kitchen means no privacy. If you are hosting guests in the other room, you can no longer slip away to make dinner. While this may not be an issue to some, this factor may be something to consider.
Focal Point
When you see open layouts on television, they always look beautiful and aesthetic. However, in the real world, the kitchen can be quite a messy place. If you are bad at getting your dishes cleaned up or keeping clutter on the kitchen counter, this layout may not be the environment best suited for you. Remember, an open kitchen layout means your kitchen can easily become the focal point of your design.
Advantages
Aesthetically Pleasing
Open layout kitchens are downright beautiful. The spacious atmosphere can make the whole home flow better. If you like Mid-Century Modern design or other design themes with open layout environments, this layout an excellent option for you.
Easier Communication
With closed layout homes, you will have much more privacy; however, on the flip side, you will also lose some of that easy bonding time. If you are in the kitchen, you can easily talk amongst family and friends throughout your home. This feature is great for social families and individuals that love the company of others.
Functionality
An open layout can give you more space when preparing food. Typically, these larger layouts make the kitchen flow much more naturally. You will have more room to spread out and work while preparing food and cleaning dishes!
