How to Decorate a Fireplace Mantel

On a cold winter night in Ohio, there is nothing that warms the home like a blazing fireplace. While a fireplace improves heat efficiency and increases the overall value of a house, it also instantly adds character to your design. In fact, you can make your fireplace the focal point of any room by enhancing the mantel with the right mix of accessories.

Decorate in Multiples

Many experts suggest using multiple layers of accessories when designing the surface of a mantle. Often, the more layers that are used, the more sophisticated the finished product will look. For instance, one simple mantel decoration idea is to use various-sized artwork. To properly execute this design idea, it is essential to incorporate artwork with mixed frame sizes. You do not always have to hang up artwork, but if you decide to, then you should avoid hanging it too high up on the wall. Your artwork should create an overlapping effect.

Decorate with Lights

Another decorative option you have is to illuminate the mantel. Unique lighting sconces add definition and style. Simply install the sconces on each side of the mantel. Or to further illuminate this area, you can incorporate a mirror in between the lighting fixtures. Try spicing things up by veering outside the straight lines with a circular shaped mirror. Finally, a couple of well-placed accessories on the mantelpiece can complete the look.

Decorate with Mirrors

Since mirrors are a common element used in home decor, let us take a different approach when decorating the mantel with several mirrors. Try some simple layering by hanging a large mirror a few inches above the smaller mirror and placing a smaller one right over the larger one. This look creates a unique look by doubling the reflection.

Decorate with Moldings

By adding to the architectural elements surrounding the fireplace, you can create drama in this space. Why not establish emphasis by painting the moldings on the wall. The moldings can be the same color as the wall or a contrasting color. Simply fill the space with accessories that match the molding colors.

Decorate with Accessories

The types of accessories you can use to decorate the mantel are endless. For a rustic look, you can consider using antique dishes and wood craftwork. For a more sophisticated look, you might want to opt for a figurine and flowers. Remember to be creative and think outside the box.
