Adding a Rug to Your Hardwood Floors

Hardwood flooring is a premium flooring option. Many homeowners adore this timeless floor for its stunning, authentic aesthetics, its exceptional durability, and its ability to enhance property value. So, if you have hardwood flooring throughout your home, is it wrong to put a rug over it? No, not at all! Rugs can protect your hardwood flooring while also adding personal comfort to areas throughout your home. Yet, adding this rug may come with a handful of side-effects you may not have considered. Here is everything you should consider before adding a rug over your hardwood floors:

Do Not Oversize It

When getting your rug, many individuals seem to think bigger is better. Your rug should not go underneath your furniture or couches in the room. Instead, let your hardwood border your area rug. For example, your couches, end tables, and lamps should all be off the rug and allow the hardwood the showcase itself. Your area rug is an accessory to your flooring; your hardwood is the real beauty to be showcased in the room.

Remember: Hardwood May Discolor

Keep in mind that hardwood floors are wood; therefore, the UV lights from outside coming through your windows will begin to fade the coloring in your hardwood. However, if a rug covers part of your flooring, it will cause uneven fading. Certain species of woods are more prone to discoloration than others. To help, close your blinds in order to prevent this aging process.

Invest in a Carpet Pad

Consider investing in a quality carpet pad. Many carpets are made with a hard, gritty latex backing, and your carpet may slide back and forth as foot traffic crosses over it over time. This will evenly start to wear away at the flooring beneath and damage your hardwood flooring. To help, you can invest in a foam or a rubber carpet pad to create a soft barrier between the rug backing and your hardwood flooring.

Hardwood flooring can be a stunning feature in your home, but it does not mean you cannot have rugs throughout your home, as well. Use your rugs to accent your flooring and give areas in your more comfort. Additionally, make sure you use a carpet pad as well as to protect against UV lights with blinds or window treatments.
