How to Find the Perfect Rug for Your Dining Room

Are you on the hunt for the perfect dining room area rug? We understand the challenge. Area rugs are produced in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes, patterns, and materials, so there are a lot of choices out there. Plus, area rugs can range in prices.

Although area rugs are an accent piece, selecting the right one is essential. After all, it is a design element that adds warmth, comfort, and style while framing the table and serving as a placemat for your dining chairs. While you can get creative with what style of area rug that you choose, there are rules when it comes to the proportions of a dining room area rug.

What Size Should My Area Rug Be?

Determining what size your dining room area rug should be can be a challenge. So here is a general rule of thumb: measure the length and width of your table and then add approximately 18-24 inches to each side. This is important because you will want to make sure you include extra room for your chairs. Additionally, if you have a table that can be extended with a leaf, your calculations need to accommodate the full size of your dining table.

Also, allowing for extra inches will allow for guests to be able to comfortably slide the chairs out and in without having to worry about falling off the edge of the rug. If the rug is too small, your chairs will scratch up your flooring. On the other hand, if your area rug is too big, it can throw things off balance, especially if you have open floor plans. You do not want the rug to trespass into another space. However, the only exception is if you are investing in a cowhide area rug. With a cowhide area rug, you can expect some of the chairs not to be able to fit onto the rug.

What Styles Work Best?

Get creative when choosing a dining room area rug. Select an area rug with an interesting pattern, but that does not compete with the aesthetics of your dining table unless you are interested in the area rug being the perfect focal point.

Whatever area rug you purchase should be symmetrical with your dining table. That means if you have a circular table, the area rug should also be circular, especially since you do not need excessive space.

If you are struggling to make the perfect choice, Levi’s 4 Floors is here to help! With a wide selection of high-quality, beautifully-made area rugs, you can make the decision process easier than ever.
