Flooring Underlayment Explained

If you are building a new home or upgrading your current flooring, you need to understand what flooring underlayment is and why you need it. Underlayment can be so confusing, and if you are new to the flooring industry, underlayment may not mean anything to you. We have listed some of the basic information below for flooring underlayment. The following benefits are the reasons why you need flooring underlayment. Support – Underlayment provides support and stability to your floor.

Minimizes Sound

Underlayment will help keep down the sound of footsteps from you and your pets.

Moisture-Resistant

This feature is significant and the perfect product for moisture-prone areas of the home like the kitchen, baths, laundry, and mudrooms. Underlayment also helps to protect your flooring while increasing its lifespan.

Subfloor Imperfections Are Less Noticeable

When installing flooring underlayment, it will ensure that the final flooring lays smooth and evenly.

Sound Barrier

Underlayment will provide extra soundproofing, especially if you have a basement, main floor, and an upstairs.

Adds Softness to the Floor

If you have purchased carpet for the bedrooms in your home, an underlayment will only add additional softness to the room. This is important if you have small children because we all know how much time children spend playing on the floor.

Makes Flooring Warmer

During the colder winter months, an underlayment will help with keeping the floor warmer when used with carpet.

Increase the Longevity of Your Floors

Underlayment will not only support your floor; it will protect against friction and increase the overall lifespan of the floor.

Please keep in mind that an additional vapor/moisture barrier will be laid down to protect against moisture in the kitchen, bathrooms, and the basement. Additionally, experts recommend not overlooking underlayment because of the additional cost. In fact, you will be happy that you included underlayment in the long run.
