What Is Biophilia and How Does It Relate to Design?

Interior design has many enhancing features facilitated to help create an atmosphere. We incorporate lines, form, shapes, colors, lights, and much more to convey different themes or the ambiance in a room. Other principles that have been commonly used through the ages are natural and authentic elements. There is something truly gratifying about integrating stunning hardwood flooring into a space, the elegance of a stoned fireplace, or even the serenity from flowing water. Biophilia is the theory that we subconsciously are intrigued or drawn towards other forms of life. This connection goes beyond animals and other humans but is also the urge to affiliate with plant life.

Biophilia Matters

We are starting to notice a significant trend in biophilia inspiration in today’s interior design. Modern times are very hectic and demand longer days at work and less time outdoors. However, our psychological essence requires more time with nature. Since we lose the spirit of the outdoor environments, we tend to thrive best in an atmosphere where nature is brought inside the home. We can notice this in architecture with large windows, scenic views, and plant life brought indoors.

Biophilia Interior Design

There are several vital elements we tend to focus on when adding this concept to interior design. It is more than merely adding a plant to your bedroom. Biophilia Interior Design attempts to visually eliminate boundaries between the exterior and interior. Large windows, green walls, and natural scents can all help encapsulate the elements of nature.

Trend or Forever?

So, is this just a simple trend people are beginning to add to their homes and businesses, or is it here to stay? Well, if the theory of Biophilia is correct, we will tend to veer more and more towards this design style. Skylights, greenery, and running water may become the norm in many designs over the next couple of decades.

It is believed that adding Biophilia to design can help increase employee morale, improve productivity, reduce stress levels, and reduce fatigue. This is great to use in your work environment as well as in your home.

What do you think about Biophilia? Will you attempt these tactics in your home? Let us know below in the comment section!
