Helpful Tips for Settling into a New Home

When you are moving into a new home, there are certain things that you will need to do in order to feel “settled.” To help you accomplish these tasks, we created a checklist of things you should do when you are settling into a new home. Let’s take a look!

Things to Do When You are Settling into a New Home:

1. Inspect Appliances, Furniture, and Boxes.

Unfortunately, appliances have the potential to get damaged during the move. It is imperative to check your appliances, furniture, and boxes as soon as possible due to time limits on insurance policies. Make sure that nothing was damaged during the move by the movers before you continue. If anything was damaged, you would need to contact the moving company immediately and submit a claim.

2. Set up Utilities.

In order to have power and electricity, you will need to make sure that you set up your utilities before you official move into your new residence. Set a reminder on your phone to ensure that you have electricity on move-in day.

3. Vehicle Registration.

If you have moved out of state or even out of the country, you will need to register your vehicles, receive a new driver’s license, tags, and plates.

4. Voting Registration.

Also, if you have changed cities, you will also need to change your voter registration to your new address.

5. Change Your Mailing Address.

You will want to go to the post office and fill out a form to get your mail forwarded to your new address. Mail will only be forward for a limited time; therefore, be sure to contact important contacts (bills, checks, etc.) to ensure you are getting your mail.

6. Get to Know The Area.

Take some time to drive around your new neighborhood. Learn where all of the emergency buildings, schools, libraries, doctors, work offices, etc. are located. Getting familiar with the area will help you feel more at home.
