Patterns are a fantastic way to add interest and uniqueness to any space. From fabrics to wallpaper, patterns can be found nearly everywhere in a room. However, there is such a thing as too many patterns in one place. So where do we draw the line? To help you in your search for the perfect balance of patterns, we have created a guide to help you add patterns into your space. Let’s take a look!
How to Add Patterns to Your Space:
Neutral Walls.
If you are going to choose a patterned wallpaper, you want to make sure that it is neutral. Keeping to neutrals will help create more of a balance in your room and allow you to throw in other patterned pieces without offsetting the entire room.
Balance It Out.
If you do decide to go with color, make sure you balance out the room. By this we mean, be sure to incorporate the pattern’s color throughout the room. The color repetition will help pull the entire look together and create a perfect symmetry.
Incorporate a Backsplash.
Of course, we are biased and love backsplashes, but who doesn’t? Backsplashes can come in an array of different patterns and unique designs that you can incorporate into your home.
Work Your Way Up.
If you are working with a small room, you always want to focus on the vertical aspect rather than the horizontal aspect. We say that because you have a lot more vertical space than horizontal space; therefore, it is essential to spend time accentuating the vertical appeal of a room. Vertical stripes can help make your room look more spacious, especially if it is on the walls.
Play Off Of The Pattern.
Like we said before, you can pull from specific patterns and create a design based off of a single piece in your room. For example, if you have a patterned pillow that you love, try using the colors used throughout the pattern inside of your room. Repeating the color will help create that balance that we were talking about early!
Get Inspired.
If you are looking to gain inspiration, look no further than the outdoors! Right outside of your house, you can find pattern and color inspiration for your room.
The Combo Effect.
Back in the day, we were told not to mix patterns because they tend to clash and it could potentially look tacky. Well, this is 2018, and we are encouraging you to use those patterns! Now, we want you to be fully aware that some patterns should not be mixed. However, there are an array of different choices that could work well with one another. Here is how you mix patterns:
Consider the scale of the design. You want to have different scales when mixing patterns.
Think about the colors. Do the colors work well with one another? Do they maybe even have the same color to tie them together?
To be safe, try mixing organic patterns with geometric patterns.
