Creating Additional Closet Space with Wardrobes

3180582_SIf you have an older home or apartment, it seems like you never have quite enough storage for your clothes and shoes. The luxury of a walk in closet or dressing room is something many of us dream of adding to our home or finding in our next home. The reality is that many older homes and condos have shallow or small closets that were made for a time when people had fewer clothes and shoes.

If this is your design dilemma, consider adding a wardrobe to your bedroom. Wardrobes come in a variety of sizes and can be found freestanding or customized as a built-in.  Freestanding wardrobes were used before the closet was standard in room designs. Wardrobes offer both hanging and folded storage, with the hanging clothes on a rod above a set of drawers.  Built-in wardrobes can be customized to fill an entire wall or look like a freestanding piece of furniture.

If you are considering adding a custom built-in wardrobe to your bedroom, consult with a local cabinet maker.  Making the built-in wardrobe look like it has always been there may mean removing the carpeting that will be underneath it so that it lies flush with the floor and existing molding. This should not be an issue if you have hard surface flooring like wood.  Remember, you can get exactly what you want with custom built-ins so design a wardrobe for the clothes and shoes you have. Some people might want more hanging storage while others want more shelves for shoes or folded clothes.
