Designing a Dining Room 101

When designing your home, several rooms may get more attention than others. We love to take pride in our kitchens and hosting rooms like a great room or den. However, if we are investing in areas for hosting, our dining rooms also deserve this care. So if you have yet to design your dining room or our still trying to figure it out, here is everything you need to know:

Functionality

Dining rooms typically serve one purpose and one purpose only- dining. While you may go to your dining room to read or play board games with the family, it is essential to keep functionality at the forefront of your design. This means your room should not feel obtrusive. It can be easy to over furnish a dining room or fall in love with a giant antique boutique to have in your dining room. Yet, paying attention to detail and your space is very important.

Symmetry

There are three types of symmetries that we use when designing a space: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial.

  • Symmetrical rooms are mirror images of themselves if you split it down the center.
  • Asymmetrical rooms have a variety of symmetry yet are designed to complement the room’s architectural layout mostly.
  • Radial symmetry is a design that starts in the middle of the room and works out symmetrically.

Dining rooms can be one of the few rooms that strive off of this design theme. If you are considering a round table, radial symmetry may be your best option. Yet, if you have a square or rectangular table, a symmetrical room would be in your best interest.

Simplicity

A dining room does not demand many elements to complete it. You need your tables, chairs, and some light décor. With proper lighting, a good paint theme, and the right flooring, your dining room is set. You can invest in a table runner, a centerpiece, or some pictures to help spruce up the atmosphere. However, remember, sometimes less can be more.

Decorating a dining room can be fun and simple. Whatever the case may be, your dining room deserves some love. Try incorporating some of these tricks in your own home, and be sure to share the outcome with us below in the comment section.
