Should I Invest in a Bigger Rug?

Whether it is just a small rug under the coffee table or a wall to wall carpet that covers your entire bedroom floor, without a rug, a room can feel a bit unfinished. Most of us tend to opt for a small rug when designing a space, but have you ever considered that you might be missing out by thinking so small? Even if you are decorating a small space, big rugs can be useful and just the element that the room is missing. Here four reasons why you might want to think about going bigger with a rug choice:

Bring Order to Open Floor Plans

A big rug can serve as a zoning aid for breaking up large areas or an open floor plan. For instance, in a space that functions as a living room kitchen and dining area, a rug can be used to separate each area visually. When shopping for a rug for the dining area, the rug should be big enough that the whole table can rest on the carpet, even with the chairs pushed away from the table.

Also, large rugs can be used to make an open space feel intimate. This can be done by using multiple rugs in different sections. In a generously sized living room, placing a rug under the coffee table and another one beneath one of the seating area will make a grand living room look less empty.

Carpet Protection

Perhaps you have inherited a beautiful vintage rug, or maybe you invested in an expensive rug before the kids came. Consider teaming your carpet with a larger floor covering to protect it, especially if it easily stains. Opt for a floor covering that features a neutral shade so that the valued textile can still make its own statement. Bringing in a second rug also makes the space feel much cozier.

Carpet or Hardwood?

Are you still agonizing over whether to enjoy the look of your hardwood floors or cover it with a beautiful rug? Get the best of both worlds by choosing an oversized rug that leaves some of your wood flooring exposed. This allows you to enjoy the natural and rustic look of wood floors while still adding comfort and luxe with a rug.
