How to Install LVP (Luxury Vinyl Planking) | Part Two

Congratulations on your new Luxury Vinyl Planking investment. Now that you know what tools you will need, you are ready for a successful installation. Today, we put together step by step of how to properly install your vinyl planks in your home. Be patient and enjoy the project ahead of you.

Installation

Luxury vinyl planking is not only extremely durable, water-resistant, and beautiful, but it is also a simple floor to install as well. Most manufacturers have created a drop and lock system where your boards can connect like puzzle pieces quite easily.

First, you will want to decide the direction you want your boards to run. Traditionally, the length of the boards will run with the length of the room, but the choice is yours to make. Find the wall you will start on and use your tape measure and pencil to create a straight line all the way down, roughly 3 inches from the wall. You can now see if your wall bows in or out and know if you need to accommodate with your install.

Next, you can start laying your boards down and snap them in place. You will want some starter boards, so be sure to use the manufacturer’s suggested cutting technique (razor, laminate cutter, or chop saw) and cut a couple of boards different lengths to be starter boards off your wall.

As you install, you may come across vents. You can trace out your vents with your marker on top of the vinyl planking to cut out the vent at the end of your install with your jigsaw blade.

If you are struggling to click your boards together, cut a board to create your own tapping block. Now you can use your hammer and the tapping block to tap your boards in place gently. Leave a small gap between wall which you can cover with quarter-round around the perimeter. Shoot your quarter-round up using your nail gun, and your room is finished!

Installing luxury vinyl planking can be a day project. Make sure you prep your room properly to ensure the best installation possible. Each manufacturer may come with a different type of drop and lock system, which can take some time to adjust. Be patient and meticulous. Your new luxury vinyl planking is a fantastic home investment meant to last for ages.
