Cleaning Your Tile & Grout

Everyone loves the luxury and beauty that tile brings to a home. In fact, tile is a timeless indulgence which can alter any room into a sophisticated design. From floors to ceilings to backsplashes, tiles can be used throughout the entire home, and having a flooring option that can withstand water, makes this a versatile surface perfect for any space. That being said, dirty grout lines and tiles can make a beautiful floor look unappealing. So if you are looking to clean your tile and grout in order to bring back their shine, here is everything you need to know.

Prep

Before tackling the grout and tile directly with cleaner, you want to give a quick sweep to the surface of the products. Whether you are cleaning your flooring or a backsplash, you first want to remove any smudges or unwanted debris. So begin by brooming or wiping down the surface of your tiles.

Clean Grout

To clean the grout, you can make your own grout cleaner or buy your manufacturer’s recommended product for best results. Remember that grout is porous; therefore, you want to allow the product to penetrate into the grout lines. First, the grout needs an alkaline cleaner to cut down the grease then an acid will break down any stains which have penetrated into the grout. For many grout cleaners, you may need to use a bristle brush to help break down grease and debris further. Just make sure you know that your grout cleaner works with your tile because some grout cleaner cannot be applied to marble and will cause severe damage!

Clean Tiles

Lastly, you will need to mop your tiles. Your grout lines will create a very dirty residue after being cleaned, which needs to be mopped. A simple blend of warm water and soap will be great for your flooring. Expect to change your water out several times. You can also spot clean with a sponge. Remember, some cleaners are created with acid, so wear proper protective equipment like gloves and eyewear.

As homeowners, we can be selective about picking the perfect grout for our tiles. Yet, when they become dirty, both tile and grout lose their complementary factor. Make sure to take care of your floorings and backsplash with this easy process.
