The First Things You Need to Consider with Minimalism

Minimalism is a great lifestyle choice, which can be reflected in all different aspects of your life. Learning to live with less can allow you to value what you do have. It can give your home a clean, aesthetically-pleasing look while also enhancing the functionality of your space. However, this is not something that can just be obtained overnight. Minimalism is a lifestyle choice which takes time to achieve. If you are looking to making your first steps into minimalism, here are three basic rules to consider:

For Yourself

If you are considering minimalism, it must be solely and utterly for yourself. You cannot expect others like your roommates, children, or spouse to adapt the lifestyle as quick as you. While this can help, realize you need to focus your efforts into minimalizing your own belongings. If this can help bring you peace, others may follow in your footsteps. However, do not expect everyone to be on board when you decide to make the switch.

No Deadline

If you are just beginning your minimalism journey, remember there is no deadline-this is for you. It is a lifestyle and takes time. You can set small goals because throwing everything out at once could just lead to anxiety. You do not need to go cold turkey into the lifestyle. Continuing to make improvements in minimalism is ideal. Try to set simple goals and tackle one task at a time.

Your Happiness

Minimalism is learning not to base your happiness on materialistic things. However, one size does not fit all. If you have a hobby which brings your joy, do not remove it from your life. You do not need to delete everything from your home to be a minimalist. Look at everything in your home. Ask yourself if this brings you happiness. If it serves that purpose alone, do not get rid of it. Minimalism is not a competition; it is a lifestyle.

Some items may serve a significant purpose in our life at a certain point and no longer be needed at another point in our life. Learning to let go can be very challenging, but learning how to know when it is time can be a strong character you will adapt through minimalism. Best of luck on your journey!
