DIY Upholstery Projects

A strong, well-balanced design is created through harmony. Matching patterns and color coordinating throughout your design can create this unity. A simple pattern being repeated in different areas of the room can really make the design pop. It is always something special when we can find an area rug to match our wallpaper or throw pillows that really accentuate the patterns on our curtains. However, finding exact matches can be slim to none. Upholstering areas in your home with your favorite pattern is the best way to achieve this treasured look. Here is our upholstery tutorial to help make your room something special.

What to Cover

You can upholster so many different surfaces in your home. Chairs, ottomans, and even throw pillows can benefit from this do-it-yourself project. You can also invest in extra fabric to create matching curtains, quilts, or other unique ideas in your home.

Supply List

To start, you will want to pick out the perfect fabric. You can go with a pattern or just a color you love. You may also want to invest in some batting–this is a cotton padding used to add some extra fluff to your chairs or surfaces before upholstering them. Lastly, you will just need a few simple tools like a staple gun, scissors, a hammer, screwdriver, and needle-nose plyers.

The Process

Upholstering chairs can be a simple do-it-yourself project. First, start by removing the piece you want to upholster. These can usually be set free from the chair by removing a few screws. Cut your batting to the size of the seat or backing you plan on upholstering. Lay a large piece of fabric around the piece with access overhanging. Pull the fabric tight and use the staple gun to fasten it into place. Use your scissors to remove any access fabric after you are finished. If you need to remove a staple, use your needle-nose plyers.

When reupholstering older pieces, be careful not to damage batting. You may be able to reuse this. Upholstery is a great beginner project. You need little skills to create a masterpiece in your home. For more do-it-yourself projects and ideas, make sure to subscribe to our blog.
