Learning Color Psychology | Chapter One

Colors can be a powerful tool in your arsenal when designing your home.  They can influence how we interpret different atmospheres, and you will find that each color has a different psychological effect and how it is interpreted by individuals.  When creating your space, having a vast knowledge of different colors and how to utilize them can help you achieve your ultimate design goals.  Colors can add warmth or cool down and atmosphere.  Too much or too little of a particular color can have negative or positive effects on a space.  Combinations and patterns can also change our interpretations.  In this series, we will explore the rainbow and all the beneficial and adverse impacts these colors can have on design. Let’s take a look!

Red

Kickstarting this multi-chromatic prism found in the sky is the primary color red.  No two colors can mix together to create this robust color.  It represents passion, and it is a highly-energetic color that just demands attention.  While being a warm-toned color, red can transform the ambiance in a room to feel impulsive and lively. In over application, however, it can have adverse effects and come across aggressive in design and marketing.  This crimson hue, while symbolizing courage, can also be used to represent danger.  Simply allowing other colors in your design with red can help it contrast and settle down adverse effects.

Orange

Next up in the spectrum is orange.  Orange is the perfect harmony of mature yet playful.  Orange evokes self-confidence, sociability, and vitality.  It is not as passionate or aggressive as red; however, it is still great to create a welcoming, heart-warming environment.  While being an optimistic color choice, too much orange can still negatively effect and area.  It can psychologically feel over-bearing, superficial, and cheap.  Try using this to complement a space and do not crowd it.

Yellow

Traveling down the rainbow, we arrive next at the creatively, inspiring color: yellow.  This radiant, sunny color is excellent for making a joyous more positive environment.  It can be affiliated with confidence, friendliness, and honor.  Be cognitive of overwhelming a space with this color though to avoid negative influences such as jealousy, irrationality, and anxiety.  Easily combat these effects by toning it down with neutral tones or other colors when designing your home.

These colors can significantly impact any design.  It is important to have balance and harmony with other colors to create different effects in your home.  Learning these simple psychological color tricks is great not only for interior design but can be applied in your fashion, marketing, and other daily adventures.  Check out the rest of the series for a better understanding of the colors of the rainbows and applications they can be applied.
