Design Trend: No More Shower Curtains

You may not be ready to say goodbye to your bathtub and embrace the tubless bathroom trend, but you might be considering getting rid of your shower curtain. Shower curtains have been a staple in bathrooms for decades, but in recent years, homeowners find themselves moving away from shower curtains and switching to glass showers. If you are looking to update your bathroom and make it look more modern, design experts say “this fabric accessory has to go.”  But if you are apprehensive to make the leap, here are some must-know facts about glass showers:

Glass Screen

Typically, a glass shower screen will extend across approximately sixty-percent of the tub, and it is attached to the walls with hinges or brackets. Depending on the model and manufacturer, they can swing out or slide back. The great thing about a glass screen is that they create a watertight barrier in the areas that are most susceptible to leaks. While you can expect some splashes, they are ninety-percent effective at keeping the bathroom from getting soaked after taking a shower. Plus, small bathrooms can especially benefit from a glass shower screen because it does not take up very much space and the glass surface visually doubles the size of the bathroom.

Frameless Glass Shower Door

Frameless glass shower doors are similar to a glass screen. There is usually a stationary glass screen on one side and a door on the opposite end with a handle that completely encloses the shower area. Frameless shower doors are more appealing because they do not have the bulky hardware and metal edges that a standard glass door would have. Often, frameless models are customized which offers excellent flexibility.

Glass Density

Whether you have decided to go with a frameless shower door or a glass screen, you will have to consider what density the glass should be. Obviously, thicker glass will be much more durable, but you can expect it to be expensive.  Thinner glass is more flexible and less costly.

Glass Style

Although a clear glass solution is popular, you can also select between frosted or etched glass. Frosted and etched glass provides more privacy, and they allow you to express some creativity in the bathroom. It depends on the homeowner’s personal style and budget for choosing a glass style.
