The Holiday season is creeping up on us quickly. This time of year tends to spark the DIY attitude in everyone! Spending more time indoors tends to make homes warm, cozy and more inviting. Scent is a key way to encourage the cozy feeling in your home. There are many ways to make your home smell lovely and fragrant and you don’t necessarily need to stock up on scented candles! Find out how to make pine cones give off your favorite scent. Make sure to start this process well in advance because it can take weeks for the pine cones to be ready for use.
Evergreen and cinnamon are popular scents for the holiday season. The beauty of this DIY is that you can select your favorite scent. You will be using scented oils to infuse the pine cones.
Once you have your pine cones (these can be gathered from outdoors or purchased from a craft store), place them on a cookie sheet. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees. Place the cookie sheet on the middle rack of the oven and bake the pine cones for about 50-60 minutes. You can check to see if they are done, by watching the cones open up. Baking causes the cones to open. This action also kills any bugs or bacteria that may be living on the pine cone.
Once the pine cones have completely cooled, place them in a large, sealable plastic bag. Fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of the scented oil to a spray bottle. Shake the mixture and check by spraying into your sink and giving it a sniff. The water in the spray bottle allows the oil to be evenly dispersed by spraying.
Spray the cones while they are inside the plastic bag. Then close the bag and lightly shake it. Open the bag once more and spray the cones generously. Close the bag and shake again. Leave the bag closed for 2-3 weeks. Spray and shake the bag once a week to disperse the scent and help the cones soak up the scent. Once the pine cones are scented to your liking, place them all around the house to create a cozy, comforting interior!
